The Magician’s Animals
Adapted from the original story by Milan Ferko.
Illustrated by Ludek Manasek.
Published by Golden Pleasure Books, London, in 1965.
Another mid-century miracle of a children’s book from Czechoslovakian illustrator Ludwig Manasek, comprising ten fold-out stories of animals, where you read the story then fold the page back to reveal its ending.
The illustrations by Manasek are full of quirky character, the cobalt blue, pale pink and mustard colour palette is pure heaven, and the cutout overlays elevate this from a simple story book to a work of art on cardboard.
A 1965 book that’s hard to find, and easy to love.
