Rewind back to 1958 and Belgian comic artist Peyo had an epiphany: what the world really needed was a colony of industrious, tiny blue gnomes, who love peace, hats, hard labour and houses shaped like mushrooms.

With the commercial success of the Smurf comics came the merchandising empire of Smurf miniatures, as well as books, films, TV shows and more.

These eight vintage Smurf miniatures from the 1970s capture the little dudes in all their early-day glory, complete with wings, paint palette, drum, flowers, stick, stethoscope, you name it.
