In this colourful first edition book, leading modern artist Sonia Delaunay presents a series of paintings accompanied by verses selected from children's literature to illustrate the alphabet.
Delaunay was a Russian painter, illustrator, and textile designer who was an early member of the Fauves group in Paris, and a pioneer of abstract art in the years before WW1.
She was fascinated by the symbolism of the alphabet, and used words or letters as themes in many of her bold, abstract paintings, and also illustrated books of poetry.
Delaunay’s paintings for this book make the alphabet sing with glorious colour, reminding me of what a remarkable talent she was, despite being somewhat overshadowed in later yers by her husband Robert Delaunay.
