A first edition of The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway, the last major fictional work Hemingway published during his lifetime, and arguably the most iconic.

It tells the story of elderly fisherman Santiago’s tussle with an 18-foot marlin, and the respect and compassion he develops for his adversary.

This book is in fabulous condition, with just a name of a previous owner written neatly and in tiny letters on the inner front board, as shown in last image. The book is otherwise clean, crisp, unmarked and has practically no signs of wear. The original dust jacket is also in great condition, showing original price of 7s. 6d., with just some very light edge rubbing, spine discolouration and just two very minor tears.

All in all this is an excellent copy of an iconic title in first edition, which most of the big rare booksellers would price between £400 and £600. One to definitely appreciate in value with age.

Also, so much to love about that jacket design by Hans Tisdall.
