This edition of Struwwelpeter was published by Routledge and Kegan Paul Ltd, London, in 1951 and features classic cautionary tales in verse about naughty boys and girls and the fates that befall them when they misbehave.
Struwwelpeter was first published in Germany in 1845 under the title "Lustige Geschichten und Drollige Bilder" and was described as "one of the earliest and most successful author-artist picture-books for the very young." Its author and illustrator, Heinrich Hoffmann, was a German psychiatrist and the superintendent of a "progressive" mental hospital. This book, supposedly intended to be therapeutic, is frankly terrifying, but its illustrations are unforgettable. It’s also widely regarded as a precursor to comic books, and is known for introducing the villainous character of the tailor (or Scissorman) to Western literature.
