Beaton made his first trip to Japan in January 1959, accompanied by his friend Truman Capote. This remarkable keepsake from his visit contains written impressions, brushwork-style drawings and photographs of the sites and people of Japan. This is a large-format book and includes several folding illustrations and photographs.

The photographs he took are collected into eight sections - The Country, Kabuki Theatre, Japanese Dancers, In Streets, Sights and Shrines, Noh Plays and Bunraku Puppets, Geisha and Others, An Appendix of People.
