A first edition of the beautiful Birds by Brian Wildsmith, in which the illustrator brings to life groups of swans, herons, pheasants, bitterns, owls, snipe, nightingales, woodcock, jays, plover, ravens, penguins, turkeys, and parrots, and lists the collective noun for each bird.
A sledge of herons, a siege of bitterns, a party of jays… the collective nouns for these feathered creatures are both obscure and curiously suitable. And the illustrations are those of a British talent and lover of the natural world working at his absolute best.
